It also forms the basis of spiritual culture in Korea, including Catholicism, Won Buddhism, and Donghak. The pansori and traditional nongak, folk music or farmer’s music, express Korea’s peculiar character of sorrow and regret, whereas the culture of food is rich, based on the fertile farming found here. The easy-going character and pure minds of its people helped create this artistic land. Its traditions have now become symbols of national identify and pride. Korea’s pop culture has been the subject of worldwide attention via Hallyu and K-POP. And likewise, Jeollabuk-do’s culture is also garnering attention around the world..
Whether planned or unplanned, many people recall the bright sunshine of Jeonju with fondness. Jeonju Hanok Village has now become the representative central cultural site of Jeollabuk-do. Jeonju Hanok Village in the Gyo-dong and Pungnam-dong areas has been promoted by Jeonju city as a symbol of local artistic talent. It was selected as ‘the shining star of Korean sightseeing’ and ‘the top attraction’ in Korea, with both local and international vacationers keen to visit. It was also selected as one of the Cittaslow cities.
Jeonju Hanok Village features Gyeonggijeon Hall enshrining a portrait of King Taejo Lee Sung-gye, as well as Omokdae and Imokdae where artifacts of King Taejo can be found. Jeonjuhyanggyo Confucian School is also found here, along with Yangjae School, which trained scholars of Confucianism during the Joseon period. You will also find the Choi Myeong-hee Literary Museum. You can take a peek at ‘Honbul’ author Choi Myeong-hee’s life and world of literature. Many cultural relics and facilities can be found in the Hanok Village where people actually live in.
